It is beneficial in many cases when some programs start up automatically when you boot the operating system. The software you regularly use after logging into the system start up at boot time then you don’t need to start it for use. This help to minimize your working time. But there are many software that you rarely use also start up at the boot time. These software just increase boot-up times and unnecessarily block your resources. So if you can stop unnecessary software to start up at the boot time then your computer will work faster. You can easily prevent these software to start up during boot time using task manager option or setting registry entry. How to manage these start up applications in windows 10 by using the mentioned two ways are shown in this article with examples.

Using Task Manager

Type task in the search box to open the Task Manager window.

Click on the Startup tab of Task Manager window. The list of enabled or disabled programs will be shown here.

Select the program that you want to make disable or enable at startup. Here Lenovo Utility program is disabled by double click. If you want you can also enable it again by clicking enable button or double click.

Setting Registry Entry

Type run on the search box to open Run dialog box.

Type regedit and click OK to open Registry Editor.

Go to the following link of the Registry Editor,


Some startup program list will be shown here. If you want to disable any startup program then right click on the particular entry. Click Delete option from the pop up menu. In this way you can easily stop any program to startup at the boot time.

But if you want to add startup program using registry entry then you have to add new entry for that program. Right click on the blank area and click String Value from the submenu of New menu to add new entry. Suppose you want to enable notepad application as startup program. So type Notepad as new entry name.

You have to set the location of notepad.exe file to enable this application as startup program. Search and copy the location of notepad.exe file.

Right click on the Notepad entry from the previous location of the registry editor. Click on Modify option to open Edit String dialog box.

Paste the location of notepad.exe in value data text box and click OK.

Now your registry entry will be look like the following screenshot.

If you open the Task Manager then a new entry for Notepad will be shown there.

You have to restart your operating system to test that the newly added startup program is working or not. If the program is set and enabled properly then the notepad will be start automatically after restarting the operating system and login. This way you can easily manage your startup programs in windows 10.
